Zcash Activates Ironwood Upgrade, Sealing $1.7 Billion Shielded Pool
Zcash has implemented its Ironwood upgrade, sealing the Orchard shielded pool containing roughly $1.7 billion in ZEC and initiating a new private pool that begins with no coins. The upgrade addresses a previous bug that risked the minting of counterfeit ZEC while adding new security measures, according to CoinDesk.

Overview of the Ironwood Upgrade
On July 28, 2026, Zcash activated its Ironwood upgrade, formally known as NU6.3, sealing the Orchard shielded pool that held around 3.66 million ZEC, valued at approximately $1.7 billion. This upgrade also opens a new private pool designated to handle funds going forward, starting from zero tokens.
Addressing Security Flaws
Prior to this upgrade, a bug in Orchard’s proof circuit could have potentially allowed the creation of counterfeit ZEC without any trace on the blockchain. Although the bug was disclosed in late May 2026 by Shielded Labs researcher Taylor Hornby, evidence suggests it was not exploited. CoinDesk reported that the balance of the Orchard pool continued to grow during the four years the vulnerability existed, indicating no immediate illicit activity associated with it.
The Ironwood upgrade introduces a turnstile mechanism that limits withdrawals to the amount that has been verifiably deposited, effectively preventing counterfeit coins from leaving the pool. This addition aims to enhance security and ensure the integrity of funds.
New Features and Provisions
In addition to the turnstile mechanism, Ironwood implements quantum-resilient record-keeping and formal verification for its proof circuits. This formal verification ensures that the software behaves correctly across all scenarios, addressing potential classes of bugs that could lead to exploitation similar to the one seen in Orchard.
Migration and Future Monitoring
As of the activation of Ironwood, a total of 1,500 ZEC have successfully migrated to the new pool. However, migration remains voluntary, and the overall speed of this transition will dictate how quickly the private supply of Zcash migrates from the Orchard pool. Until this occurs, the majority of Zcash's private funds will remain in a non-addable pool.
Trading of ZEC occurred around $463 at the time of the switch, reflecting a decline of 8% on that day and 15% over the previous week. Although ZEC's price remains significantly higher than a year prior, monitoring the pace of the migration from Orchard will be critical in assessing the impact and future stability of Zcash's private ecosystem.
