1inch Launches Shared Liquidity Layer Aqua for EVM Chains

On July 28, 2026, 1inch launched its shared liquidity layer, Aqua, to the public, eight months after an initial release for developers. Aqua operates across 13 EVM chains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, and Robinhood Chain. Instead of requiring deposits into a liquidity pool, the protocol allows providers to approve a wallet balance and create positions that utilize this balance when making swaps.

In a departure from traditional liquidity pools, Aqua operates as a registry. Tokens remain in the user’s wallet and are only pulled when a swap matches the predefined conditions of a position. This design not only affords liquidity providers more control over their assets but also introduces a verification process where every swap is executed by a "verified counterparty," defined as a market maker or arbitrage bot confirmed on-chain at the time of the swap. 1inch claims this makes Aqua the first risk-controlled liquidity venue in decentralized finance (DeFi).

According to 1inch, Aqua is part of a broader trend towards risk-controlled and regulated DeFi. When Aqua was initially made available to developers, 1inch indicated that anyone could execute swaps on a position, and now the protocol’s mechanism seeks to prevent adverse actions related to fee skimming, which previously could cost providers significantly.

For example, if a liquidity provider holds $100,000 in balance, it can support up to three positions totaling $300,000 in quotes. However, since swaps can only be executed against the tokens actually held, exposure is limited to the wallet’s holdings rather than the cumulative value of the positions.

Looking ahead, users and liquidity providers will be monitoring how Aqua impacts trading volumes and activity across supported chains, as well as any potential developments regarding further risk management features or adjustments to the protocol's operational framework.
