AI Girlfriend Apps Generate $427M in Global Consumer Spending
NSFW and romantic AI companion applications have amassed nearly $427.3 million in consumer spending since their launch, according to data from Appfigures. In the first half of 2026 alone, users spent $162.8 million on these platforms, which have seen more than 165 million downloads since late 2022, as reported by Decrypt.

According to analytics firm Appfigures, NSFW (not safe for work) and romantic AI companion apps have generated $427.3 million in consumer spending globally since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. These apps have accumulated over 165 million downloads across Apple’s App Store and Google Play, showing significant popularity among users seeking digital companionship.
Randy Nelson, Head of Insights and Media Relations at Appfigures, noted that the data reflects consumer spending before the 30% platform fees imposed by Apple and Google. In the first half of 2026, consumers spent $162.8 million on these AI companions, with a total of 214 apps identified in the NSFW and romantic category.
Among these applications, Zeta was the highest-grossing app, generating $33 million in revenue during the first half of 2026. Other notable performers included Tipsy Chat with $15.2 million, ChatBox with $13 million, Crushie AI with $8.8 million, and Emochi with $7.5 million. Interestingly, while general or “PG” AI companions had a higher total of downloads, the revenue from romantic apps was nearly equal, indicating their strong market appeal.
In terms of downloads during the same period, Emochi led the way with 7.9 million installs, followed by Amora with 3.6 million, Zeta with 3 million, BIMOBIMO with 2.8 million, and MiraiMind with 2.6 million.
This trend reflects a growing interest in AI chatbots for companionship and emotional connections, contributing to the rise of a subculture known as "digisexuality," focused on relationships with AI companions. As these technologies continue to evolve, the financial implications for developers and platforms remain significant.
