Zcash has experienced a 45% rebound in value after its developers proposed the Ironwood upgrade to address a critical counterfeiting bug, as reported by CoinDesk. While the token trades around $437, it remains down approximately 22% over the past week due to the earlier bug disclosure that triggered a major sell-off.

Zcash Rebounds 45% Following Ironwood Upgrade Proposal by Developers

Zcash has risen about 45% from a recent low after developers proposed the Ironwood upgrade, designed to fix a significant counterfeiting bug in its privacy-focused Orchard pool. This proposal aims to enhance the verification process, allowing users to confirm that no counterfeit Zcash (ZEC) tokens are in circulation.

The proposed Ironwood upgrade would involve migrating users to a corrected privacy pool. This system change would enable anyone running Zcash software to verify the total supply of ZEC by ensuring that no more than the correct amount exists. The upgrade follows a disclosure by Shielded Labs, a nonprofit developer associated with Zcash, about a bug that could have allowed an attacker to create unlimited fake ZEC tokens without detection.

Initially, Zcash saw a sharp decline after the bug announcement. Just last week, the token plummeted to nearly $300, significantly impacting its market performance. Currently, ZEC trades near $437, although it is still down around 22% over the week. The bug, which had been present since 2022, raised concerns because it could let illicit actors withdraw funds from the protocol’s shielded pool, which is tasked with ensuring transaction privacy.

The bug has since been patched through emergency network upgrades led by developers from Shielded Labs, the Zcash Foundation, and the Zcash Open Development Lab, in coordination with mining pools such as ViaBTC and Foundry. This group proposed the Ironwood upgrade on June 6, with the goal of restoring users' confidence in verifying coins' existence. The new upgrade would feature a repaired code that prevents new coins from being created in the older Orchard pool. It offers users a way to verify the supply of ZEC tokens without needing to trust the developers' claims or waiting for all funds to migrate.

Furthermore, as users transition their coins to the new pool, any counterfeit tokens would either be revealed or rendered unusable, potentially clarifying whether the flaw was ever exploited. Developers have stated they believe the chance of such abuse was low.

Ironwood has gained traction beyond the immediate Zcash community, receiving public endorsement from investors. For instance, entrepreneur Chamath Palihapitiya described the upgrade mechanism in his newsletter, highlighting its potential for providing anyone running a node the ability to confirm the cleanliness of token supply. However, developers have not specified a timeline for the rollout of Ironwood, noting that the process of building, testing, and coordinating the upgrade across the network could take longer than expected.
