Yield Guild Games Shuts Down Crypto Game Publishing Arm Amid Market Challenges

Yield Guild Games (YGG) is shutting down its YGG Play division, which focused on publishing crypto-infused casual games, and plans to retire several of its titles, including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper, by August 1. The closure will also eliminate 35 positions within the company.

The firm cites the ongoing crypto market downturn, which it describes as having rendered the business model commercially unsustainable, as a primary reason for this decision. YGG Play initially aimed to carve out a niche in the industry by creating "casual degen" games that appealed to crypto enthusiasts who do not identify as traditional gamers. The division managed to launch its original game, LOL Land, and partnered with brands like Pudgy Penguins NFT. Up until the first quarter of 2026, it reported over $9 million in lifetime revenue.

However, the broader trend in the crypto gaming industry has been challenging. Since early last year, many prominent blockchain-based games have ceased operations, compounded by substantial declines in crypto prices. Bitcoin, for example, has dropped nearly 50% since its peak in October 2025. Traditional gaming sectors are also experiencing turmoil, highlighted by recent layoffs at major companies, including Xbox.

YGG has decided to pivot toward the AI data economy, with plans to provide gaming-derived behavioral datasets for training artificial intelligence systems. Co-founder Gabby Dizon stated,

"Sunsetting YGG Play is a heavy decision, but it is a market decision, not a product decision. I am proud of what this team achieved under such tough conditions, and what they built is a testament to their talent and dedication. Although this business unit is sunsetting, YGG's vision and mission hasn't changed. We are still fully dedicated to using technology to open up new economic opportunities for people globally."

As the company transitions away from game publishing, it will be important to monitor how this shift towards the AI data sector influences YGG's future strategies and developments within the broader gaming landscape.
