Three Men Sentenced for $5.3M Crypto Fraud in UK
Three men in the UK have been sentenced for a cryptocurrency fraud scheme totaling £4 million ($5.3 million), where they impersonated police officers to deceive victims. The Metropolitan Police detailed how the gang used fake websites and laundering networks to acquire and spend the stolen funds, as reported by Decrypt.

In the UK, three individuals have been sentenced for participating in a £4 million ($5.3 million) cryptocurrency fraud. The group impersonated police officers to extract crypto holdings from eight unwitting victims. They crafted convincing fake police websites and coerced victims into sharing account details or transferring funds to what they falsely assured were secure police accounts, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
Following the deception, the stolen cryptocurrency was funneled through a complex laundering operation. The trio spent the illicit funds on luxury items, including Rolex watches and exotic holidays. This lavish lifestyle came to light during police investigations, revealing they lived vastly beyond their means, despite one individual having a reported annual income of only £444.
At Southwark Crown Court, Anthony Ikenwe, aged 29, and Kevin Nwamma, 25, received sentences of six years for conspiracy to commit fraud and five years for money laundering, both to be served concurrently. Hamza Bashir, aged 23, was sentenced to three years and nine months for fraud and three years for laundering, also to run concurrently.
The Metropolitan Police noted that they have so far recovered about £1 million linked to the victims. In addition to tracing the cryptocurrency to wallets controlled by Ikenwe, they identified how stolen funds flowed into accounts associated with Nwamma's luxury chauffeur service. The investigation began after victims reported the scams in January 2025.
Detectives found luxury goods worth over £26,000 during their searches, alongside significant cash stashes amounting to approximately £500,000 hidden in a safety deposit box in Dubai. The authorities continue to trace remaining assets to provide restitution to the victims affected by this elaborate scheme.
