Nearly $5 Billion in Bitcoin Options Reflects Bullish Sentiment
Bitcoin options at the $70,000 and $72,000 strikes on Deribit now account for almost $5 billion in open interest, revealing extensive bullish sentiment among traders, according to CoinDesk. This positioning stems from optimism surrounding the potential passage of the CLARITY Act, despite recent scaling back of positions as market sentiment shifts.

Bitcoin options on the Deribit exchange show a significant concentration at the $70,000 and $72,000 strikes, together holding nearly $5 billion in open interest. This amount represents about 18% of the total $28 billion in BTC options on the exchange. The open positions reflect a strong bullish sentiment, with calls at these strikes far outnumbering puts.
At the $70,000 strike, traders have opened approximately 39,000 call contracts compared to about 3,800 puts, while at $72,000, there are roughly 37,900 calls against only 1,200 puts. This pronounced call-to-put ratio underscores optimistic expectations among market participants regarding Bitcoin's future price movements. Call options grant buyers the right to purchase Bitcoin at a set price, indicating a belief that the market price will exceed these levels.
Recent trading activity has revealed considerable bullish strategies, such as large bull call spreads where traders buy the $70,000 call while simultaneously selling the $72,000 call, both of which constitute nearly half of the call open interest at these strikes. Additionally, substantial premium payments have been made for upside exposure, as highlighted by a sizable purchase amounting to $3.4 million for calls at the $70,000 strike.
Jimmy Yang, co-founder of Orbit Markets, an institutional digital asset liquidity provider, noted that these bullish trades have been significantly influenced by expectations surrounding the CLARITY Act. He stated, "Earlier this month, we saw decent demand for BTC topside calls, with the 31 July $70,000 and $72,000 strikes being particularly popular. A lot of this positioning was driven by expectations that the CLARITY Act could be passed before the end of the month." However, optimism has waned; the likelihood of the CLARITY Act's passage has dropped from 51% to 38% in recent days amid comments from Senate Majority Leader John Thune suggesting delays in congressional approval before the August recess.
The evolving situation highlights changing market sentiment and the interconnectedness of regulatory developments with trading strategies in the cryptocurrency market.
