Mysten Labs Launches Walrus Memory for AI Agents

Mysten Labs has developed and launched a new product called Walrus Memory, designed as a portable memory layer that enables AI agents to maintain context across different applications, sessions, and providers. This innovative platform aims to empower users by giving them control over their data while improving the efficiency and capabilities of AI agents.

Kostas Chalkias, co-founder and Chief Cryptographer at Mysten Labs, points out that agentic memory poses significant challenges for AI systems. He argues that the effective use of memory is fundamental for AI agents, stating, "The major misconception in AI is that compute is the only bottleneck." He adds that the real issue lies in how AI systems manage memory, and the goal of Walrus Memory is to remedy this limitation. According to Chalkias, traditional AI models have struggled in this area, and developers have been stuck creating makeshift solutions that leave memory fragmented and unreliable.

Walrus Memory aims to integrate with leading AI models such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini and offers compatible plugins like OpenClaw and NemoClaw. The platform is designed to facilitate seamless sharing of memory among AI agents, applications, and workflows without being restricted to a single runtime or provider. This capacity allows for improved collaboration among multiple agents working on complex tasks, thus enhancing workflow without losing context.

In addition, Walrus Memory incorporates advanced cryptographic features, including zero-knowledge proofs (zk-proofs), which enable agents to verify contextual information while ensuring data remains private and secure. Chalkias notes that these features contribute to better long-term agent performance by allowing programmable access to encrypted memory. He claims, "I don’t believe any other, especially blockchain-focused solution at the moment, is solving all of these three elements, which is a necessity for AI agents." This positioning sets Walrus Memory apart, aiming to address not just computational issues but also privacy and data-sharing concerns facing AI development today.
