DOJ Task Force Freezes $3.8M in Illicit Crypto with Support from Tech Giants
The U.S. Department of Justice has coordinated with corporations like Coinbase, SpaceX, and Meta to freeze over $3.8 million in illicit cryptocurrency associated with organized crime. The initiative, known as "Disruption Week", aimed to combat crypto fraud, which reportedly led to a loss of nearly $11.4 billion for Americans last year, according to Decrypt.

On June 4, 2026, a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) task force announced the freezing of more than $3.8 million in cryptocurrency linked to organized crime in Southeast Asia. This effort, which included major firms such as Coinbase, SpaceX, and Meta, also disrupted approximately 1.4 million social media and email accounts involved in fraudulent activities.
Known as "Disruption Week," the initiative aimed to bolster collaboration between private companies and governmental agencies to tackle crypto-related fraud. Notably, FBI's Internet Crime report highlighted that Americans suffered approximately $11.4 billion in losses due to crypto fraud schemes in the previous year. U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro, emphasized the significant impact of cyber and crypto investment fraud, stating it devastates the financial lives of ordinary Americans.
"Cyber-enabled and crypto investment fraud is devastating Main Street Americans, wiping out life savings and preying on some of our most vulnerable citizens," Pasquale stated. "We will not allow transnational scammers or the Chinese organized crime groups behind them to use America's internet infrastructure against us or let U.S. companies stand idly by," Pirro added.
The collaborative efforts of firms like Google, Meta, and Microsoft supported the interruption of millions of accounts utilized by criminals. By leveraging information from law enforcement, these companies successfully froze illicit funds. Pirro noted, "Disruption Week shows what is possible when governments and private industry focus their efforts in tandem: millions of scam accounts interrupted, and criminal networks pushed off the U.S. internet platforms on which they rely."
A physical meeting of the "Scam Center Strike Force" occurred in Washington, D.C., from May 18 to May 21. During this time, participants exchanged information that led to the freezing of funds and the arrest of seven individuals in Thailand.
FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned that partnerships among agencies and private organizations are vital in the fight against illegal activities. "One of the best tools we have in combatting these illicit actors is our partnerships and they are only getting stronger," Patel stated.
