CZ Seeks to Reshape Image and Boost U.S. Crypto Liquidity

Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, founder of Binance, has expressed a desire to redefine his public image while advocating for improved liquidity for U.S. cryptocurrency traders. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, he highlighted that Binance.US could significantly enhance the trading experience for American consumers by tapping into the greater liquidity available through its global counterpart.

Despite being the dominant shareholder of both Binance and its U.S. arm, CZ stated that he prefers to take a backseat role, informing others about the company's direction rather than managing operations directly. He noted, "I prefer to help founders from the background, rather than be at the center of a headline." His reluctance to take on a day-to-day management role comes after a tumultuous period that included his stepping down from the role of CEO amid legal challenges.

During the interview, CZ acknowledged that U.S. crypto markets currently suffer from higher transaction fees and slippage—the difference between the expected and actual transaction prices—compared to their overseas counterparts. "U.S. consumers don’t have access to the best liquidity," he remarked, noting that improving this situation is essential if the U.S. wants to be a leading market in cryptocurrency.

CZ outlined that enhancing Binance.US’s liquidity would directly benefit U.S. consumers, who currently pay a premium for cryptocurrency transactions. To address this issue, he advocates for allowing Binance.US to leverage the liquidity of the global exchange. However, he maintains that local leadership is key, asserting, "It needs to be somebody local; it needs to be somebody who’s on the ground," when discussing the complexities of running a U.S. platform.

The separation between Binance and Binance.US remains a central theme in CZ's strategy. While he is the primary shareholder of both entities, each operates with its own leadership structure and strategic objectives. CZ referred to them as "two very separate companies," further emphasizing that they do not communicate regularly.

Reflecting on his leadership style, CZ mentioned that he does not focus on the daily operations or financial statements of Binance. Instead, he tracks the exchanges’ health through general market indicators, such as the Bitcoin price. "If the Bitcoin price is going up, the company is generally doing well," he said, indicating his more hands-off approach towards running his companies.

Looking ahead, CZ aims to play an advisory role for the many businesses he invests in. He stresses a preference for brief, informal interactions as a means of support. "If any of those guys wants to talk to me, they can just send me a message," he noted, illustrating his commitment to providing assistance without formalized engagement.

As he works to redefine his public persona and steer U.S. crypto trading in a more favorable direction, CZ’s insights mark a notable shift in strategy for Binance amid a challenging regulatory landscape.
