Circle Acquires Nearly 1,000 Blockchain Patents from IBM
Circle has secured almost 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM, claiming the title of the largest holder of such patents in the United States. The patent portfolio encompasses various areas including blockchain technology, banking, and insurance, though financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, as reported by CoinDesk.

On July 27, 2026, Circle announced the acquisition of nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM, positioning itself as the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States. This portfolio includes more than 680 distinct patent families that cover a wide array of applications, including blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification, and cloud security.
Although the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, Circle intends to leverage these patents to enhance its stablecoin, USDC, as well as its Circle Payments Network and Arc blockchain. The company also aims to develop financial tools aimed at AI agents and explore future commercial opportunities with IBM.
“Intellectual property is critical to advancing our mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure,” said Sarah Wilson, Circle’s general counsel and corporate secretary. This acquisition marks a strategic move for Circle, especially given that IBM was already a significant player in the blockchain patent landscape, holding 790 patents prior to this sale, according to an analysis by the patent analytics firm PatSnap.
Circle's strategic focus on patents is underscored by its earlier efforts to shield its products from patent-assertion entities, exemplified by its participation in the LOT Network. The firm received its first patent related to blockchain technology in December 2023, signaling a commitment to building its intellectual property portfolio.
As of now, Circle has not clarified details such as how many of the acquired patents are issued in the U.S., whether IBM retains any licensing rights, or if IBM has future plans to license or enforce these patents. Circle expressed its openness to comments on these inquiries, though no response has been noted from the company at the time of the report.
