Chainalysis Proposes Standards for Blockchain Tracing

On June 29, 2026, Chainalysis published a proposed ontology designed to enhance blockchain analysis. This document outlines how investigators can identify clusters of cryptocurrency addresses and analyze them to determine the connections between different wallets. The proposed standards aim to improve the reliability of the data used in investigations, tailoring approaches to meet the specific needs of law enforcement.

According to Jacob Illum, the company's chief scientist, this initiative seeks to start a broader conversation within the industry regarding effective blockchain analytics. The ontology breaks down the concept of "clusters"—groups of addresses potentially under the control of a single entity—into various components. By providing clarity on the structure and confidence of these clusters, Chainalysis hopes to aid investigators in understanding their data better.

"If I was the one who needed this information to either convict or prosecute... what would I want a tool to do?" Illum stated, highlighting the practical utility of the tool for investigators. The ontology emerged from Chainalysis' experience with high-profile cases, including its work in the prosecution of Roman Sterlingov, co-founder of the crypto mixing service Bitcoin Fog.

The firm leverages its success in court, where its Reactor tool was validated for reliability during a Daubert hearing—an important procedural step in assessing the admissibility of expert testimony. Illum pointed out that while Chainalysis can track funds to exchanges, the company cannot identify individual users without additional information. This distinction emphasizes the limitations of blockchain analysis tools and the importance of further collaboration with law enforcement.

Illum noted that the proposed ontology is still in the early stages, and although there have been initial discussions with law enforcement, the firm welcomes broader industry feedback. "When people start stepping away from independent scrutiny about their methodologies, like independent testing, that’s a clear danger sign," he remarked, underscoring the need for transparency in analytic standards.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition within the cryptocurrency ecosystem about the necessity of creating robust frameworks for data analysis. As blockchain technology evolves, the ability to trace funds accurately will remain crucial, not just for compliance, but also for maintaining trust in the system.
